Scientific & Cultural Balance: While geological science is the priority, the project actively welcomes the cultural impact of the Moon, regularly publishing artistic compositions, crescent alignments against terrestrial landscapes, and historical drawings.
Crowdsourced Contributions: The imagery features a mix of professional data (such as views from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) and amateur astrophotography submitted by global moon-watchers. Platform Transition
The project was originally founded and maintained as an independent web archive by planetary scientist Charles Wood on the official Lunar Picture of the Day Website. While the legacy website occasionally goes offline for system maintenance, the community remains highly active through the public LPOD Facebook Group, where thousands of astrophotographers share daily, high-resolution observations of the lunar surface.
